Stressed - By Vida Langdon, LMT

STRESSED?

It is all around us, it even lives inside of our bodies and minds, and there is no escaping it. It is merely impossible to get through the day without feeling its presence, seeing it on the local news, or hearing about how it is affecting our friends and loved ones. It is called STRESS, and it is slowly, but surely killing us! According to the National Institutes of Health, 80-90% of all illnesses are caused by stress, either directly or indirectly. Time magazine's June 6, 1983 cover story referred to stress as "The Epidemic of the 80's", as if it were some type of plague. 40% of employee turnover rate and one million employee absences daily are related to stress, costing US businesses an estimated $300 billion annually.

The effects of too much stress can be felt in nearly every part of our bodies, from back pain and headaches to internal problems. Excessive stress causes the liver to produce extra cholesterol, negative changes in blood pressure, and reduces a person's ability to fend off disease. There is heightened media attention because of the growing confirmation of the role of stress in heart disease, hypertension, sudden death, depression, anxiety, smoking, obesity, substance abuse, cancer, arthritis, gastrointestinal problems, skin conditions, and a host of infections and immune system disorders.

Clearly something more than stress balls, morale boosters, and quiet time are needed to deal with this silent, but deadly killer called STRESS! There is a very effective solution for combating stress that is just a fingertip away … medical massage therapy! Medical massage therapy is the manipulation of the soft tissue structures of the body in order to prevent and alleviate pain, discomfort, muscle spasm, and stress; and, to promote health and wellness. Massage therapy improves functioning of the circulatory, lymphatic, muscular, skeletal, and nervous systems and is likely to improve the rate at which the body recovers from injury and illness.

Massage can improve the quality of your life, whether you have a specific medical condition, suffer from chronic pain, or just need to reduce your stress levels. "Massage is to the human body what a tune up is for a car. It provides a physical and mental boost to the weary, sore, and stressed…"-----Chicago Tribune, April 6, 1995.
